Peter & Rachel – The Proposal!

Warning: Large post with many pictures!

Ever since Cassie and I have gotten together, I’ve been getting to know her friends whom she grew up with on the East Coast. Spanning over many years, the friendships are deep, they’re fun, and they really know how to have a good time! =) From this group, I had the privilege of meeting Rachel and her boyfriend, Peter. We went on some double dates and I even did a portrait shoot with them in New York City last summer!

Fast forward to this past weekend – Peter popping the question!  He’s been planning this proposal for a few weeks and boy did it show from the many extensive emails outlining his plans.  Cassie and I returned to NYC this week so it was a perfect excuse to go on another double date together!  His original idea of us ice skating together in Central Park was ruined by 70 degree spring weather, but we can’t complain about that =)

Gunny & Lynn: The Proposal!

I got an email early last week that read:

B/c in Genesis 2:18 “The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone…” and b/c I believe Lynn’s the most awesome person in this whole wide world, I have decided to propose to her this Thursday!

How exciting!! The proposal itself was a private moment between the two so I don’t have any pictures from that.  (I hear it involved a lot of candles, a teddy bear, and a whole ton of good old fashioned Gunny romance)  But I did get to be part of the surprise party with family and friends later that night at Lynn’s sister’s house!

We ran into a minor hiccup when we first arrived; Gunny emailed us the wrong address!  No one answered the door.  Fortunately for us, directly across the street was a house with a lot of activity going on.  We guessed that was probably the correct house, and we were right!

Now all we had to do was wait in the dark for the couple to arrive so we could surprise Lynn! She came in sporting a beautiful ring on her finger so I assume she said yes. Good job Gunny! The rest of the night was filled with fun & festivities with the great couple.

I did manage to fire off a couple of shots throughout the night to capture it. It was a joyous occasion -the smiles in the pictures tell it all =)

Suggey & Christina

I had the joy of shooting my friend/roommate’s wedding last month.  When describing Suggey and Christina, the first word that comes to mind is probably “fun”.  Most people will agree.  And their wedding was fun!  It was also beautiful.  The sermon was a blessing, every aspect of the ceremony was touching, the speeches were hilarious yet moving, and the whole day was a joyous celebration.  I’m now left without a roommate but I couldn’t be more happy for them =)  Congratulations to the couple and newly formed family!

Suggey & Christina – An Engagement Shoot!

Q: What do you do when it’s mid-December in Illinois in sub-freezing temperatures with an e-session to shoot?

A: Maaaan – what do we midwesterners look like? Pansy tropical flowers? Go and shoot that e-session.. and throw it on the ground! (…and have some fun!)

Well, that’s what we did with Suggey and Christina!  These two are so much fun to be around and I think it shows in their pictures =)  As for the cold and cloudy weather? Couldn’t keep ’em down.  Nor could the crutches due to Suggey’s injured ankle.  He persevered and came out like a champ (and he must have a REALLY built left leg after that day). Can you imagine not being able to walk or stand on both feet and being constantly asked to contort your body in all sorts of poses for a few hours?  Christina’s a lucky girl.  And from what I can see, Suggey’s one lucky guy too ;)

We went for themes of friendship, silliness, with a hint of goth and a kiss of romance.  That’s a lot of themes.  Who am I kidding?  We just did anything and everything and it worked out great for these two.  Go ahead and see for yourself!

Partly Mysterious, Hundred Percent Dae & Jina – The Proposal Video

A few weeks ago, Dan wrote a post about his ninja-style photographing of Dae’s creative proposal to Jina.  If you’ve seen it, there were probably portions of it that left you scratching your heads.

Hmm.. wonder what Jina is watching?

And what's with the football pads?

With Dae and Jina’s consent, that mystery is now revealed for us to know! But hold your horses! Before you jump straight for the video, know that it will not make any sense without a little background!

The Background.

You see, Dae created a proposal so personal and customized that it warrants a little explanation to fully appreciate it. The first time Dae and Jina went to a theater was to watch Pixar’s animated film Up. But this video has nothing to do with Up. Like most Pixar films, prior to the movie there is a quick digital short, which in this case is called Partly Cloudy. If you’ve never seen it, watching it is a must!  And even if you have, go ahead and give yourself refresher -it’s good for your soul. Go here to watch it.

This heart warming piece about friendship and commitment touched Jina. Remembering this, Dae decided to create a digital short of his own that parallels the storyline in Partly Cloudy. The story though is centered around the beginnings of their courtship process. The locations, time frame, and scenes are based on real events but artistic license was taken too. Keep in mind that the acting and interpretation of events are overly dramatic and done for laughs. Without spoiling the video, in case it’s not obvious let’s just say that Suggey’s acting (and everyone else’s too) is over the top and was never intended to reflect reality ;)

The Big Day.

On a sunny Monday afternoon, pretending that they were going to have an outdoor lunch date at a park, Dae casually mentions to Jina that he made a little video for his sister and wanted Jina to look it over.  He fires up the video and the screen fades to white. This is intentional to let Dae know that the video is indeed running and that he now has exactly 6 seconds before the actual short begins.  While Jina is distracted, he makes a dash for it to give her some alone time.

Without further ado, see the video for yourself. Enjoy!

Inside the box was a hand written note for Jina. The contents will remain a mystery to us =) And if you couldn’t figure it out, the bag Dae received from the girl are the football pads, which Dae changed into while Jina was watching the video. It was all a success and Jina said yes!  And can you believe that this was just the beginning of the full day he had planned out for them?  What a guy.
